Wildcards have been confirmed for the 2024
US Open which will begin on August 26 at Flushing Meadows. Headlined by
Bianca Andreescu,
Naomi Osaka,
Dominic Thiem and
Stan Wawrinka in this case.
Andreescu is of course a former winner of the tournament back in 2019. But she has only just returned recently after a long injury layoff so doesn't have the ranking as of yet to get in by right.
Same can be said for Osaka who is a four-time Grand Slam champion and former multiple US Open winner. She even played qualifying this past week for Cincinnati choosing a route that is not befitting of the likes of Emma Raducanu and Caroline Wozniacki who have shirked playing outside of wildcards.
Both get in though for the first time in a Grand Slam by right sneaking into the top 100 so do not need wildcards. Osaka was initially slated to play qualifying. While Amanda Anisimova who is now back in the top 50 also receives a wildcard due to the cutoff for the Entry List. She earned her way in through the US Open wildcard challenge. Top Americans accrue points to get a wildcard and with her runner-up spot in Toronto, she got in well ahead of any other player.
Others include McCartney Kessler on the women's side as well as Chloe Paquet and Taylah Preston as reciprocal wildcards from FFT and Tennis Australia. In the men's, Dominic Thiem who has been snubbed time and again in his final year has been given his farewell.
A former champion in 2020 in his greatest tennis moment, he will get to play a final US Open. While Stan Wawrinka a former champion in 2016 also gets in as a wildcard. Others to do so include Learner Tien through the same route as Amanda Anisimova. Christopher Eubanks too who has seen his ranking plummet since his Wimbledon run needed one to get in after being in the top 50 previously.
