Leylah Fernandez made a winning start at the 2023
Miami Open beating Lesia Tsurenko 6-4 6-3 in the first round of the WTA 1000 tournament.
Fernandez has been going up and down with her form for months now without any sort of indication that she'll stabilize her tennis. Even this match was very up and down but she managed to impose her heavy game against her opponent allowing her to play quite aggressively. It didn't look too good at the start of the match because Tsurenko was up 4-0 and it seemed like the set was over.
It was anything but over as the Canadian mounted a counter-offensive winning six games in a row for the reverse bagel and it was mostly due to her attacking the second serve of Tsurenko. The forehand was set and it was rolling. The second set was kind of similar. Once again it was Tsurenko who took the early lead 2-0 but Fernandez would fight back.
First, she made it 2-2 and then she dropped her serve once more only to mount a similar comeback as in the first set. She won four games in a row this time as opposed to six and finished off the set 6-3. Quite up and down but once she settles, she's very dangerous on these courts in Miami.
