🇨🇦💪 A quarterfinalist last year, @leylahfernandez comes hot out of the gate downing No.21 seed Linette 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. #RolandGarros
Leylah Fernandez hasn't played that well leading up to Roland Garros but he did play really well at the event last year and earned a big win over Magda Linette 6-3 1-6 6-3.
Leylah Fernandez hasn't been playing that well this year with a lot of up-and-down performances. She's capable of hitting a really solid level at times but for the most part, she's generally playing very mid. It's not anywhere close to her best and she's misfiring far too often with the forehand. If she wants to get where she wants to go, she needs that forehand to work to perfection.
The first set saw Linette play really well taking an early lead 3-1. Fernandez was not playing as sharp as she needed to but in a very odd twist, she started to play much better. The forehand was working and everything was looking very good. She went on to win five games in a row to take the first set 6-3.
The second one wasn't very good. This time around Linette was able to impose her will a lot better than she did in the first set. She once again took an early lead and was able to hold it for much of the set taking it 6-1 in the end.
The 3rd set was a pretty decent one from Fernandez once more. She had to fend off some early break points but after that, Fernandez was able to take a lead and then hold it to finish things off 6-3. She had 7 winners less than Linette but also 16 errors less than her opponent and that ultimately proved crucial.
