Here comes the sun ☀️ @leylahfernandez is into the next round after defeating Arango in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. #MiamiOpen
After a day in which play was very much sparse eight matches aside, two winners were confirmed within minutes of each other that will play each other in the third round at the Miami Open as Leylah Fernandez will face off against Jessica Pegula in a top Last 32 (Third Round clash).
Fernandez flew past Emiliana Arango, a qualifier from Colombia 6-4, 6-2 to book her spot in the next round. This was a marked change as she played seemingly without discomfort or any sleeve on her arm which was an issue in recent weeks.
But while the scoreline was very much depicting a story of a simple win, the first set was anything but as Fernandez looked great up until 5-0 up. Fernandez folded like a deck of cards as Arango nearly picked her pocket for the opening set. It was suddenly back on serve at 5-4 up to Fernandez. Albeit she weathered the storm. She came back to seal a break back immediately and finally close it out after barely winning a point on serve from 5-0 up.
The second set was very much a back and forth tussle in the early going as Fernandez went 2-0 up, but lost her serve straight away only to regain it as Arango faltered and from there, both neither really gave any more opportunities away on their serves. Until the final game of the match as Fernandez surged to the finishing line and broke Arango after an initial 40-15 service game prior, it was the same scoreline on the Colombian's serve as Fernandez prevailed in just under an hour and 20 minutes.
Elsewhere, Jasmine Paolini saw off Katie Volynets in two sets, while Danielle Collins sits on the verge against Anastasia Potapova of a home hope win as Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka are among those to come shortly in Miami.
