Leylah Fernandez returned to tennis at the BNP Paribas Open in
Indian Wells where she paired with
Coco Gauff to win their 1st round match.
Leylah Fernandez has not played tennis since losing the US Open final but today she finally made her return to the courts albeit in the doubles draw. She paired native Coco Gauff, a fellow tennis super talent to kick off their doubles campaign in stellar fashion. Gauff usually plays doubles with McNally but she is injured which allowed this interesting pairing to happen.
They faced off against a novel doubles pairing of Begu and Voracova and they did not have a great time on the court against the soaring Gauff and Fernandez. The start of the match showed how this match was essentially going to go with the American - Canadian combination dominating rallies and points. They were flying around the court hitting all kinds of shots while serving well as well.
They won the first set with 6-1 in only 24 minutes and the 2nd one again with 6-1 but this time around in 29 minutes. A total of 53 minutes on the court should allow them to familiarise themselves with the conditions before they start their singles campaigns. A great start for the duo might go deep if their chemistry continues being great as it was today.
