Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova fire Czech Republic to Billie Jean King Cup triumph against Ukraine

For the first time since 2018, the Czech Republic stands on top of the world. They win the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in a resounding 2-0 win against Ukraine in Shenzhen to win the prestigious title.

Headed by Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova, the 2026 Wimbledon finalists were on another level compared to the rest of the tournament. They did not even need to utilise the world No.1 doubles player Katerina Siniakova throughout the whole tournament. She watched on as their leading singles players saw off Great Britain and Spain while dropping just one set in the process.

Ukraine were competing in their very first BJK Cup final. This was despite not having Marta Kostyuk in their ranks, who pulled out due to a wrist injury. Elina Svitolina was on hand to lead them past Belgium and the two-time reigning champions Italy. However, on this occasion, the Czech team were too strong for them.

Muchova proved to be too strong for Anhelina Kalinina in the first match ahead of Noskova and Svitolina’s showdown. Noskova clinched the first set before 12 consecutive holds led to a tiebreak. The Wimbledon winner kept her cool and, with a third match point, won a 12th title for the Czech Republic.

It says a lot about the depth of the nation’s team when two-time Grand Slam finalist Muchova is the number two player. She faced off against Kalinina and came out a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 winner.

The World No.8 got her country off to the best start possible with her singles win. Kalinina was up against it from the off, not able to make a dent in Muchova.

The Czech managed to get the first break on the board in a very tight game to take a 2-1 lead before backing that up with a hold of serve. Kalinina was unable to create any chances of her own as Muchova doubled her advantage. She led 5-2 and was able to serve it out with a first set point.

Muchova was very strong on serve all game, not giving away a single break point while dropping just three points on serve in the second set. Four holds were played out before the definitive blow was struck by Muchova. She raced into a 4-2 lead before failing to convert another break point. Kalinina was let off the hook, but not for long. The 30-year-old ended the match with more fortune against the serve to put the Czech Republic one to the good.

A blockbuster tie between Noskova and Svitolina would follow. Both players were under a huge amount of pressure to perform in front of their countries, and on this occasion youth prevailed over experience. Noskova won the Czech Republic the BJK Cup with a 6-3, 7-6(5) triumph.

After both players started well on serve, a brace of breaks saw Svitolina originally take a 3-1 lead before Noskova reacted instantly. She then created seven consecutive break chances in a single game, seizing the initiative in the fourth deuce. In fact, Noskova would not drop a single game from 3-1 down for the rest of the set. She struck late against the Svitolina serve and propelled her country one set away from the coveted title.

The second set was ridiculously tight. The score was level at 4-4 after eight consecutive holds of serve without trouble as both players showed their immense class under pressure. A hold to love by Noskova edged her within one game of the title, but Svitolina drew level at 5-5. Another chance to serve it out was quickly snuffed out as the second set went the distance.

Fitting the trend, it was a ridiculously tight tiebreak. That was until Noskova won three points on the spin to lead 6-3. Svitolina saved two match points, but the third one on the Noskova serve was not dealt with as the 21-year-old continues her fine season, this time for her country, as the Czech Republic are crowned as the champions.
