Leylah Fernandez readies backhand.
The DC Open began with several big names making their first appearances in Washington, led by defending champion Leylah Fernandez returning to the tournament where she lifted the trophy last year. The Canadian made an immediate statement, while Emma Navarro, Liudmila Samsonova, Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Janice Tjen also secured victories on the opening day.
The first round delivered a mix of dominant performances and dramatic battles, with Fernandez and Navarro advancing in straight sets, while Cocciaretto survived a three-hour thriller and Samsonova completed a comeback against Madison Keys to continue the action in the US capital.

Fernandez begins title defence with dominant Linette victory

Leylah Fernandez def. Magda Linette 6-1, 6-4

Defending champion Leylah Fernandez made the perfect start to her DC Open campaign, needing just one hour and 20 minutes to overcome Magda Linette and immediately show that she remains one of the players to beat in Washington.
The Canadian controlled the match from the opening stages, using her aggressive left-handed game to constantly put pressure on Linette’s serve. Fernandez was far more effective when creating opportunities, converting five of her break chances compared to just one for the Pole.
Fernandez’s consistency behind her own serve was another key factor in the victory. The No. 7 seed landed 70% of her first serves, winning 74% of those points, while also taking 69% of second-serve points to prevent Linette from building any real momentum on return. After a dominant opening set, Fernandez handled the pressure in the second and closed out a convincing victory to begin her title defence with confidence.

Navarro survives Kenin fightback after flawless opening set

Emma Navarro def. Sofia Kenin 6-0, 7-5

Emma Navarro produced one of the strongest starts of the day before having to withstand a significant challenge from Sofia Kenin to secure her place in the second round.
The American was almost untouchable in the opening set, delivering a complete performance on serve and return. Navarro took full advantage of Kenin’s struggles behind her first serve, converting 3/4 break opportunities while saving all five break points she faced.
Kenin responded by raising her level in the second set and finally found a way to put pressure on Navarro, pushing the World No. 26 into a much tighter battle after the opening-set bagel.
However, Navarro showed composure when the match became complicated. After Kenin fought back into contention, the American regained control late in the set and sealed the victory with two consecutive breaks to avoid a deciding set.

Samsonova rallies past Keys in heavyweight battle

Liudmila Samsonova def. Madison Keys 3-6, 6-4, 6-4

Liudmila Samsonova produced the comeback of the day, recovering from a set down to defeat Madison Keys in a battle between two of the most powerful hitters in the DC Open draw.
Keys started strongly and used her explosive baseline game to take control of the opening set, but Samsonova gradually began to find more consistency and disrupt the American’s rhythm.
The Russian turned the match around by becoming more effective in longer exchanges and finding the decisive moments in the final two sets. After leveling the contest, Samsonova stayed composed in the decider and completed the comeback to secure a valuable opening-round victory.

Cocciaretto survives three-hour thriller against Tauson

Elisabetta Cocciaretto def. Clara Tauson 4-6, 7-6, 7-6

Elisabetta Cocciaretto survived one of the most dramatic matches of the opening day, defeating Clara Tauson after a marathon battle lasting three hours and six minutes.
Tauson looked in control early, taking the opening set and carrying her momentum into the second. The Dane then created further pressure, but Cocciaretto responded by fighting back from a break down and forcing a decisive shift in momentum by dominating the second-set tiebreak.
The deciding set became a battle of resilience, with both players trading breaks as neither could establish control. Tauson was extremely efficient when chances appeared, converting 4/5 break points, while Cocciaretto created far more opportunities but converted only 3/14 chances.
Despite missing several openings, the Italian remained mentally strong in the biggest moments. Cocciaretto produced another composed tiebreak performance to complete the comeback and claim one of the toughest wins of the tournament so far.

Tjen overcomes serving issues to defeat Šramková

Janice Tjen def. Rebecca Šramková 6-4, 6-2
Janice Tjen continued her strong progress on the WTA Tour with a straight-sets victory over Rebecca Šramková, overcoming an inconsistent serving day to control the match.
The Indonesian landed just 48% of first serves, but Šramková struggled even more in that department with only 41% of first serves finding the mark, allowing Tjen to maintain pressure throughout the contest.
Tjen finished the match winning 61% of service points and 55% of return points, showing her ability to compensate for the lack of first-serve percentage with strong baseline play and effective returning.
The difference came in the key moments, as Tjen converted five break opportunities compared to only two for Šramková. After edging through a competitive opening set, the Indonesian pulled away in the second to secure another important victory in Washington.
