Caroline Wozniacki won her first match back at the Canadian Open before losing out to Marketa Vondrousova, but found her route at the
Cincinnati Open (Western & Southern Open) a tad tougher.
Wozniacki, the former World No.1 faced
Varvara Gracheva instead of Elina Svitolina with the latter pulling out last night before rain delays meant that the former World No.1 had to return anyway the following day.
Awaiting her was Gracheva, who recently defected from Russia and now plays for France and had not won a singles match since Wimbledon where she reached the second round.
A lucky loser after losing out to Cristina Bucsa, she took her chance in a 6-4, 6-4 win over the former Australian Open champion who will head to the US Open as a wildcard so a danger to the big seeds in the first round.
Wozniacki's main issue came on break points as she went 0 for 9 and for Gracheva, a break either side of each set proved to be the winner as she prevailed in just over an hour and a half. She will now face Daria Kasatkina who won through against home hope Peyton Stearns earlier today.
Also through already today are Petra Kvitova, Jelena Ostapenko and Martina Trevisan with Victoria Azarenka and Qinwen Zheng currently aiming to reach the second round.
