Serena Williams won the Miami Open in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and
Iga Swiatek emulated her with a terrific feat at the
Qatar Open. She has now won it in 2022, 2023 and 2024 and is the first player since the great American to do so.
An unstoppable showcase from Swiatek of her form and also WTA Tour dominance. Swiatek saw off Rybakina in a 7-6(2), 6-2 win after previously seeing off Karolina Pliskova in a walk-over, Victoria Azarenka, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Sorana Cirstea without dropping a set.
She now moves on to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships aiming to build up another lead in the World No.1 race as well as continue her title winning form. She has to defend a final from that run 12 months ago, while the champion in Barbora Krejcikova won't be defending anything after withdrawing.
But she will have Aryna Sabalenka clipping at her heels who returns over the next week and builds up a nice back and forth going into Indian Wells and Miami. Swiatek though for now holds all the cards and another accolade to add to her collection, emulating Serena and showing her Qatar dominance.
"I'm happy that I kept working and just didn't really think about too many stuff during this week and just focused on the right things, because I think it was the key," she said. "Coming here and being kind of the double-defending champion wasn't easy. So I'm happy that I have this experience already, and hopefully, I'm going to use it."
