Only one
WTA Finals spot was available yesterday and
Maria Sakkari clinched it with a win over Veronika Kudermetova.
It was a match where the winner would secure the spot as the Russian had a good chance as well. The odds favoured Sakkari and she took her opponent by surprise beating her 6-1 in the opening set. The second was a very close one with both players having break chances midway through but neither being able to use them.
Towards the end, Kudermetova found another gear and secured the second set 7-5. She was unable to carry that momentum into the 3rd set as Maria broke early to set the tone and she held her nerve. The only break point she faced was at 5-4 when she was serving for the set and she saved it to close out the match.
The Greek will play at the WTA Finals once more adding her name to the list of players that are already there. Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, Caroline Garcia, Daria Kasatkina and Maria Sakkari.
