The defending champion Iga Switek is out of the event after being defeated by
Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-4.
The Greek ace played a sensational match against the defending champion defeating her in about an hour and a half of play. Swiatek started off well taking a 2-0 lead but it soon evaporated as Sakkari was able to pull it back to 2-2. The Polish did not play a great match as her baseline game was once again misfiring.
Sakkari was able to match her intensity and even outhit her at times which proved key in both sets. She broke Swiatek at 4-4 to take a 5-4 lead before closing out the set with 6-4. That gave her immense confidence and she played the 2nd set without any mistakes.
She broke Swiatek in the first 2nd set game and she never looked back. Not allowing a single break point she dominated points with her great serve and dominant baseline display. Swiatek continued misfiring from the baseline while Sakkari was brilliant today.
Swiatek started playing better after an MTO but the damage was already done and she did not find a way to come back. It seems the pressure of defending the title got to her a bit as she did not play as brilliant as she did last year. Today's she was also outmatched by Sakkari who was by far the better player.
