Maria Sakkari's shoulder injury continues to blight her with a big ranking drop likely for the Greek as she won't defend her Guadalajara Open title.
Taking place from September 9-15, 2024, Sakkari went last year from despair crying in her press conference after losing at the US Open to winning her biggest title and breaking her title duck.
But breaking down in tears during her opener at the US Open this year, she had to retire after the first set due to lingering shoulder issues which have blighted her since the Olympic Games.
Now those 1,000 points will drop off. Albeit she was always on a hiding to nothing even if she defended the title as the ranking points will differ this year. It got demoted from a WTA 1000 to WTA 500 this year.
Sakkari now is more likely to return during the Asian hard court swing instead as she confirmed that she isn't ready yet. "Unfortunately I won't be able to play at GDL Open this year. I am still recovering from a shoulder injury and it needs more time to heal," she wrote.
"Last year, I experienced one of the best moments of my career there and it's one of my favourite tournaments to compete in. To all my fans in Mexico, I hope to see you soon and thank you for your continued support."
