As expected, Jannik Sinner won't play for Italy next week despite initially entering to play Davis Cup in similar fashion to both Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
Djokovic and Alcaraz will both play next week with the latter already being known to be travelling to Valencia to train ahead of their tie. He has spent time at the Ferrero Tennis Academy.
After being eliminated in only the second round, Alcaraz has had time to rest and recoup ahead of his next mission with the Laver Cup also coming in the week after followed by the latter half of the season including the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia and the Asian swing.
But Sinner who like Alcaraz will compete in most of those will in fact not play next week. This is expected though given that he is still in New York.
He faces Taylor Fritz on Sunday in the US Open final. The defending champions instead will be comprised of Matteo Berrettini, Matteo Arnaldi, Flavio Cobolli, Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli. Lorenzo Musetti has also had a busy Summer and has asked for some rest. They play Brazil on Wednesday then Belgium on Friday and Netherlands on Sunday.
It is the start of the Finals Group Stage. But likely given their strength of the team, they will count on Sinner again in the final stages. He anchored Italy to glory last season.
It famously started his run of form in particular over Novak Djokovic but their team captain confirmed that they would be without Sinner's services. This was done as a conscious decision given his workload as of late.
"As far as Jannik goes, who told us he was available for the latter stages of the competition in Bologna, in accordance with the federation leaders and his staff, we decided to relieve him of his call-up and allow him a full recovery," Volandri said in a team announcement.
