Aryna Sabalenka won’t reach the Stuttgart final again this year after falling at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix to Marketa Vondrousova who is finding her form again after injury struggles since winning Wimbledon last year.
Sabalenka who was defeated the last two years by Iga Swiatek saw off Paula Badosa in the last round in an emotional clash. But was no match for the Czech ace in this case who of course is a former Roland Garros finalist so has form certainly on this surface.
Vondrousova sealed the win in just over two hours in a closely fought encounter 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. After Sabalenka lost her serve early in the deciding set, both saw their serves fell apart in the mid portion of the match. Three breaks in a row saw it back on serve at 4-4. But pivotally Sabalenka dropped hers at 6-5.
This allowed Vondrousova to serve it out and she took her chance in a close tie to move through. Next up will be Marta Kostyuk or Coco Gauff who face off later today. Next up is Iga Swiatek v Emma Raducanu.
