Former world number one
Andy Roddick believes that playing
in a tough competition such as the
Billie Jean King Cup would help Emma
Raducanu in the remainder of the campaign. The 21-year-old is often regarded as
one of the most highly-rated players currently playing in the women’s singles
category.
Raducanu has struggled with continued fitness concerns and
it was because of this reasons she ended up missing three out of the four Grand
Slams in 2023. The Toronto-born returned to action at the start of the year but
has failed to live up to the hype. Despite some poor outings, she was selected
to represent Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers against
France.
Interestingly, the selection of the former world number 10
proved to be a masterstroke as she played a key role in helping Britain qualify
for the finals after registering a 3-1 win against France. She registered a
hard-fought win against Diane Parry with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 which secured
her team’s place in the next round.
Roddick was recently quoted in a report where he stated that
participating in such an event and representing your country is a tough task which
will help the former US Open winner in the remainder of the season.
Emma Raducanu played a key role in helping Great Britain secure a place in the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup.
“I think it could have relevancy for the rest of her season,”
he said. “Emma came back, skipped Miami to participate in Billie Jean King Cup.
I mean Parry, from France, in like big matches that had our pressure pack like
for your country is a nervy gross, feel like you want to vomit before you go on
to court type experience.
“I thought she did great, won a tight match. 7-6 in the
third against Parry that’s a big win for her. She has lost a tight three-setter.
To win two matches, it's been a handful of a time when she won two matches in a row,
on a surface that she hasn’t played much on at all, I think that is a big, big
deal for her.”
