Ons Jabeur
defeated
Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 6-3 and will compete for a spot in the Finals
against Swiatek.
Two players
who arrived with the obligation to win after discouraging losses in the first
round. The Czech Marketa Vondrousova (7th) put up a fight in the first set of
the match against Swiatek, but ended up at a very low level, losing 7-6, 6-0.
On the
other hand, Jabeur had suffered a tough defeat against world No. 3 Coco Gauff
by 6-0, 6-1 in a black day for the Tunisian.
In the
first set, the first to take the lead was Jabeur by securing a break in the
opening game and going up 2-0. Although she fought for a second consecutive
break, Vondrousova managed to defend a tough third game and then got a break
that evened the match.
In a disputed set, where there were break points in nine
of the ten games played, Jabeur took the decisive lead in the fifth game with a
break and then held her serve, taking advantage of her fourth set point to lead
6-4.
In the
second set, Jabeur once again took the lead in the first game and went up 2-0.
After the Czech defended her serve, four consecutive breaks followed between
the two players. However, it was Jabeur who eventually put an end to the break
streak and held her serve to take a 5-3 lead.
In the
ninth game, Vondrousova did not play the crucial points well and ended up
losing her serve for the fourth time in the set, giving Jabeur the victory 6-4,
6-3.
With this
result, the Czech is eliminated from the tournament, while Jabeur still has a
chance. Their last matches will be Swiatek against Jabeur and Gauff against
Vondrousova, with the African and the young American vying for the last spot in
the semifinals of the
WTA Finals.
