The 5th
seed,
Marie Bouzkova, left no room for
Amanda Anisimova, securing a decisive
victory of 6-0, 6-1 in the second round of the 2024 ASB Classic in Auckland.
The
American had made her comeback to the tour on January 1st with a triumph over
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (7-5, 6-4), although after the match with the Russian,
she admitted contemplating withdrawal due to back discomfort. On the other
hand, the Czech player had a strong debut in the tournament by defeating
Magdalena Frech (6-0, 3-6, 6-4).
The first
set was a solo performance by Bouzkova, keeping her opponent on the defensive
throughout. The Czech secured three consecutive breaks, winning 76% of service
points and 68% of return points, ultimately taking the set 6-0 in just 20
minutes.
Anisimova
struggled with numerous unforced errors in the set and had a challenging start
in the second set, losing her service again, allowing Bouzkova to take a 3-0
lead with her serve. The 22-year-old American managed to win her first game,
narrowing the gap to 3-1, but couldn't match Bouzkova's level.
In a mere
50 minutes of play, the Czech, ranked World No. 36, clinched a dominant 6-0,
6-1 victory, confidently advancing to the quarterfinals. Anisimova only won 22%
of Bouzkova's service points, capturing a mere 30% of the total points
contested. The American fell far short of the level she displayed against
Pavlyuchenkova, raising questions about her physical condition.
Bouzkova is
yet to discover her next opponent, which will be determined by the outcome of
the match between the second seed Elina Svitolina and the 2021 US Open champion
Emma Raducanu. On Anisimova's side, her next challenge will be at the
Australian Open, marking her return to the main draw of a Grand Slam after a
year. The former world No. 21 is set to make a comeback on the big stage.
