Mirra Andreeva is into the Last 16 of the 2024 China Open after prevailing in a comeback win and it seems that the 17-year-old is picking up form again after an up and down period this summer.
Andreeva took down Donna Vekic to reach the Last 16 with the Croat having the summer of her life. She reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam and also claimed an Olympic silver medal.
This has propelled her to heights that she has not reach prior despite a long career and she has been consistent since then. But she lost out today narrowly. After taking the opening set, Vekic looked to be in the ascendancy. It was very much the matter of break chances being taken. She broke for 3-2 and held from there to make it 4-2 before breaking again for the set with Andreeva not being afforded any chances to hit back.
But the second set was very much fine margins. Both held their serves throughout limiting their opponents any way in until the latter half of the set where Andreeva after a dominant hold seized the initiative and went 5-4 up before sealing the set.
The final set saw Vekic actually lad 3-1 and she looked to be heading towards the win. But Andreeva turned it around breaking back immediately and eventually breaking to go one away and flipping the momentum back in her favour to seal the win. She now faces Magda Linette in a winnable Last 16 tie. The Pole saw off Jasmine Paolini in a pretty uncharacteristic win. She wiped the floor with the Italian 6-4, 6-0 in a poor defeat for the Italian.
Elsewhere Karolina Muchova continued her epic form easing past Jaqueline Cristian 6-1, 6-3. While Amanda Anisimova has taken the first set and a break against Daria Kasatkina.
