Coco Gauff continues her title defense after defeating
Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-0, advancing to the third round of the
US Open. The world No. 3 has now secured 15 Grand Slam victories this season, following her semifinal appearances at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and reaching the Round of 16 at Wimbledon.
Gauff powers past Maria to reach US Open third-round
An opening set where both players exchanged early breaks saw the score tied at 3-3, until Gauff capitalized on her opponent’s second serves to gain the upper hand. Despite struggling with her first serve, landing only 47% compared to her opponent's 64%, the American No. 1 was more threatening on the return.
The 20-year-old rising star showcased her champion’s poise by saving several break points to close out the set 6-4. Tatjana Maria tried to disrupt Gauff’s rhythm by using slice shots, but it wasn’t effective enough.
After winning the first set, Gauff played with more freedom and confidence in her shots. The second set began with a tough service game from Maria, but Gauff once again proved stronger in crucial moments, securing an early break and dominating the match from there.
Gauff was unstoppable towards the end of the match. Her forehand showed significant improvement, with fewer unforced errors and a higher level of play at Flushing Meadows compared to her inconsistent performances in previous weeks. However, she will need to improve her first serve percentage, which was below 45%, as she moves forward in the tournament. Gauff finally closed out the win 6-4, 6-0 and awaits the winner of the match between Elina Svitolina and Anhelina Kalinina.
