Coco Gauff has become the sixth American woman in the Open Era to seal 60 major match wins before turning 21 after a comeback win over
Elina Svitolina at the 2024
US Open.
It was a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win for Gauff who had to weather a real storm early on to see off the Ukrainian who as ever is always a test. But it was a real test of the metal of Gauff who perhaps would've lost that match a few weeks ago.
Coming into the tournament not in the best form, Gauff compared to last year has not been playing that well. But truthfully she shows the grit of a champion when she needs it most and did so today.
Whether she does for the rest of the tournament remains to be seen but it will be potentially Emma Navarro next who dumped her out of Wimbledon. Or it will be Marta Kostyuk who proved a style nightmare in their last few meetings. Both saw their games fall apart and it was a pretty tough watch. So for those wanting more appealing on the eye, Navarro is the one to root for.
It was very much missed opportunities for Gauff in the early going that gave Svitolina the impetus. A missed opportunity on return at 3-3 saw Svitolina then break the next game and just like that she was a set up.
But the second was more of a Gauff led affair. She broke to go 4-2 up in the second and this really turned things around. Her forehand started to dominate and she clinched the second set 6-3.
Her serve is usually the weapon that lets her down. But it was rock solid for the remainder of the tie as she extended rallies, drew errors and served superbly until 5-2 when she had to close it out. But that was a mere finishing line issue and she found a way through. The title defence continues for the American.
