Racing towards the finish line 🏁 Medvedev 6-4 6-4 Van de Zandschulp @DaniilMedwed · #AusOpen · #AO2022
Daniil Medvedev continued playing well in Melbourne with another solid performance, defeating Botic Van de Zandschulp 6-4 6-4 6-2.
The Russian had a much easier time playing against Van De Zandschulp compared to Kyrgios and the previous round and it was a welcome sight. They played at the US Open last year and Medvedev went on to win that event. He will hope something similar happens here as well. In terms of the match, it was a very similar one to the one in New York.
For the most part, Medvedev controlled the match and never lost control of it but the Dutch player were never out of it either. The first one was decided by one break as Medvedev won it with 6-4. The Russian was brilliant on his first serve not allowing too much to his opponent. He only faced 3 break points all match long while forcing 11 of his own.
Van de Zandschulp did some damage on Medvedev's 2nd serve which was unusual to see but the Russian served well enough to wiggle out of those situations. Van de Zandschulp saved 7 of 11 break points he saved so he was pretty solid overall. The 2nd set was once again decided by only one break and Medvedev won it with 6-4.
The final set was the most impressive one from Medvedev as he looked to finish it off quickly. His opponent could not keep up and the Russian cruised to a 6-2 finish. A good effort from Medvedev who kept it in 3 and less than two hours.
