Tsitsipas AO 2022
Stefanos Tsitsipas faced a very motivated Benoit Paire and he was able to escape in four to move on to the 2nd week.
Stefanos Tsitsipas always had very good results in Australia and those continued in 2022. He faced a very motivated Benoit Paire who was playing fairly good tennis himself and won. The Greek player controlled the early match but found himself in a tricky situation once Paire found a higher level in the 3rd set. The Greek was able to rally in time to avoid going to a 5th.
It was well enough for Tsitsipas early on as his serve allowed him to dictate tempo fairly well. He created a lot of issues for Paire on his 2nd serve and was able to take advantage of that. He converted one of three break points he had to win the opening set with 6-3. The 2nd set was an interesting one where both had chances. It was Tsitsipas who used them converting 1 of four break points while saving both he faced.
His serve was once again the deciding factor as it allowed him to win points easier than Paire. Over time that wore down the Frenchman who faltered last in the set giving Tsitsipas the 7-5 lead. The 3rd set saw Paier play his best tennis overall. He served much better and it proved key especially in the tiebreak where he outplayed Tsitsipas and won it by 7-2.
The Greek player wasn't happy with that score and came out determined in the next set. Paire failed to keep up the high level and gave the Greek too many chances. One of those chances was used to close out the match with 6-4.
