The
Merida Open Akron is getting into the business stages of the tournament with
Jasmine Paolini heading the field into the semi-finals. She found herself in a perilous position in the early stages of her quarterfinal clash against as resurging
Katie Boulter but came back to win 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The two-time Grand Slam finalist is making her debut in the event in
Mexico as she looks to get her 2026 season on track after some early exits casting a dark shadow on proceedings. Compare this to Boulter who began the year just making it into the Australian Open main draw after a dreadful 2025. She has already won a title at to Ostrava Open and was experiencing a seven-match winning run which has boosted her up to world number 64.
It looked like the former British number one was looking good to make that next step into the semi-final stage after she blitzed the first set. She won 12 of the first 13 points before surviving three break points from Paolini. She won the next two games and bageled the Italian in a rampant first set.
Paolini finally got on the board to kick off the second set as she went 2-1 in front, Five consecutive breaks of serve occurred as both players struggled to stay firm when starting the point. The world number seven managed to stay in front and when at 5-3 she ended the run of breaks with a perfectly time hold to see out the set and level it up.
Paolini would win the first eight points of the third set to explode out of the blocks. Boulter got the break back and went 3-2 ahead but Paolini would show her class. She won the final four games while limiting Boulter to just four points. She got the job done with her first match point and sealed a determined victory as she makes a first semi-final of 2026.
"It was a really tough one - Katie, the first set she was smashing every ball and hitting a winner everywhere," Paolini told
Sky Sports. "I was telling myself to play more deep in the court and hit the ball harder because I had to raise the level to try and win the match and in the end it worked out. I was trying to be calm, to think what I had to do. I think when you're nervous you can't find the solutions."

Another seed falls
The day before, three seeds fell which included the reigning champion Emma Navarro. The number four seed
Marie Bouzkova was one of the last to remain but her venture in this tournament has come to an end to
Magdalena Frech, losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
In a match that took over three hours, there were a lot of twists and turns throughout. Frech clinched the early advantage before Bouzkova won three on the spin to move 3-2 in front. A double break from the Pole saw her race ahead once more, moving 5-3 ahead before instantly after winning a fourth game in a row to seal the first set.
She would have hoped to get the job done straight away but that was not the case as the world number 34 came fighting back. Four consecutive breaks halfway through the set saw it stay firmly on serve with neither able to steal away the advantage. It was Bouzkova who was able to get her nose out in front with a very late break of serve to level the match up.
Frech responded with a break to kick off the third set but again Bouzkova responded later on and got the match back on level terms. Frech then stole a march, breaking twice enroute to sealing a huge win as she books her spot in the semi-finals. She is one step closer to a second WTA title.

2024 champion out
Zeynep Sonmez will not be able to regain the title she won in 2024, losing 6-3, 6-4 to Cristina Bucsa. The Spaniard was the faster starter, breaking twice while saving five break points in a single game on the pathway to going 4-1 ahead. Five breaks ended the set but that firmly suited Bucsa who broke to love to seal the overall advantage.
After five consecutive breaks, five holds on the trot calmed the match down with just three return points won in this period. The next game saw four points against the serve won as Bucsa broke to love to edge closer to victory. Sonmez broke back as Bucsa attempted to serve it out, but Bucsa was able to get the job done on her opponent's serve. She will take on Paolini in the second semi-final.
The other quarterfinal was a one-sided affair between two qualifiers, with Shuai Zhang making the most of her week with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva. Zhang began with a double break before the Romanian pegged her back with a break of her own. Zhang then saw it out with another three game spurt to move in front.
Zhang began the second set with a rare hold while saving five break points. What would follow is seven consecutive breaks of serve as both players failed to take control of the match. Zhang finally ended the breaks as she took her fourth match point when serving it out and will now face Frech for a spot in the WTA 500 final.
