A great 1st round matchup between Garbine Muguruza and Donna Vekic turned into a great 1st round match that ended in two very close tiebreaks. The start of the match featured very good play from Vekic who applied a lot of pressure on Muguruza. The Spanish player held on for a while but ultimately lost her serve to give the Croatian a 4-2 lead.
She would pull it back immediately making it 4-4 but not without saving a few more break points. In the end, we ended up in a tiebreak where Muguruza proved more composed winning 7-4. The key was the 2nd serve play as Muguruza was slightly better.
The 2nd set was a very similar one but early on it was Muguruza who proved better. She took an early 3-0 routinely cruising to the finish line. However at 5-3 when she served for the match she allowed herself to get broken giving Vekic a chance to come back. The momentum swung to Vekic's side but Muguruza remained calm and we went into a tiebreak.
It was a very closely contested one but it was Muguruza once again that proved better winning it 7-5. The key was the 2nd serve as well as Vekic was simply not good enough winning less than 50 % of those points while Muguruza won over 50 % of her 2nd service points. A strong win for Muguruza who moves on.
