Muguruza makes winning start at Volvo Car Open
After a sensational start to the season, Garbine Muguruza is looking forward to this next part of the season. It's time for the clay season which is also her favorite season. Her first event is the Volvo Car Open in Charleston where she made a winning start. It took her just over an hour to take care of Magdalena Frech 6-1 6-3.
The Polish player entered this match as a clear underdog and that showed early in the match. Muguruza came out firing on all cylinders quickly demolishing French 6-1 in the opening set. In the 2nd set, Frech played much better, controlling games on her own serve rather well.
She could not do anything on Muguruza's serve and eventually, the Spaniard was able to take control of the match. At 3-3, she carved out several break points before converting the 5th one to take the lead. She would confirm the break in the next game to make it 5-3 before closing it out with 6-3.
It was a good start for Muguruza on the clay albeit not her favored red one. She will look to continue her great season gearing up to the French Open where she will be one of the favorites.
