Former French Open champion Garbine Muguruza had to work hard but claimed victory over Coco Gauff 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3 to reach the Last 16 at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia Rome.
Muguruza claimed the first set on a tiebreak but the momentum shifted from there towards the 16-year-old who recovered to claim the second set.
Gauff started the third and final set the better of the two going 2-0 up; but Muguruza turned the set around to clinch it 6-3 with the former's serve not helping her in the third. This was shown with 13 double faults.
These double faults proved vital in the final set in particular; with three successive leaving the door open for Muguruza to level and Gauff then hit two more to fully turn the match in favour of the Number 9 seed.
Another double fault saw Muguruza earn three match points; and this was sealed with a forehand into the net. Next up for the Spaniard will be Irina-Camelia Begu or No.7 seed Johanna Konta in the third round.
