The last time Garbine Muguruza played was a while ago and it was a loss but today against Ajla Tomljanovic in Madrid it was a strong victory 7-5 6-2.
The Spanish played missed some time with injuries but returned in Madrid where she never really played that well. It's one of her favourite events to play but she advanced past the 2nd round only once before. Last year's edition was also missed due to an injury so getting back to the capital was very emotional for her. It was a rough start as the player traded early breaks.
After that, both settled in nicely with Muguruza relying on her powerful serve to keep her opponent away from break points. The Australian played rather well and held her own until 5-5 when Muguruza finally found some break points taking the 6-5 lead. She closed it out with 7-5 and after that, it was a completely different game.
Muguruza continued applying pressure and playing with a lot more confidence than before. She took an early break and that added another one as Tomljanovic took an off court medical timeout. Upon return, nothing changed much with Muguruza still controlling the match rather well and winning it with 6-2 in the 2nd set.
