"My confidence is super high" - Gauff after reaching first clay quarterfinal

Coco Gauff is through to the Volvo Car Open quarterfinal and after reaching her first quarterfinal on clay the young American has all the confidence in the world.

It was a tale of two sets for Gauff as she was impressive in the first set while quite shaky in the second. In the end, she was able to battle past Davis 6-2 7-6(2) by winning key points and generally being the better player when it mattered the most. After the match she said:

"My confidence is definitely super high. I feel like each match, I’m doing better and better, and I’m excited to hopefully keep continuing and excited to play the quarterfinal."

The confidence that Gauff mentioned was on display throughout the match. In the first set, everything worked well for Gauff but in the 2nd set, she was missing a lot of shots but even so, her confidence remained high. Speaking on the misses she said:

"I think it’s just important to just continue to trust my shots and trust my strokes. Even if I miss hitting a good shot, those are the misses I want to make."

Ultimately the plan worked for Gauff as she was able to reach the quarterfinal of a clay event that was only her 3rd even ever on the dirt. Her next opponent has been Ons Jabeur who has played a consistent brand of tennis in 2021.
