Naomi Osaka (No. 229) achieved a huge victory over Elina Svitolina (No. 17) in the second round of the Miami Open. The former world No. 1 secured her sixth triumph in WTA 1000 tournaments in 2024 and guaranteed her return to the top 200 after a year.
In the first set, both players had a 62% first serve percentage, but Osaka made the difference in effectiveness, winning 85% of her first serves compared to Svitolina's 61%. The early games saw no opportunities for either side, and the first break points came in the sixth game, where Osaka capitalized on her second chance to take a 4-2 lead.
The former world No. 1's momentum continued until the end of the set, where Svitolina struggled with her serve and conceded another break, giving Osaka the set 6-2, despite the game not being as one-sided as the score suggested.
Osaka's effectiveness with her serve remained in the second set, and although Svitolina played impeccably in her first service games, she once again suffered a break in the sixth game, allowing Osaka to take a commanding 5-2 lead in a match that seemed almost finished.
The Ukrainian then mounted a comeback, defending her serve and capitalizing on Osaka's tension to secure her first break of the match. Svitolina kept herself in the match and took it to a tie-break, where Osaka led from the start and sealed her victory on her second match point with a score of 6-1, 7-6(5).
In the third round, Osaka will face Caroline Garcia (23rd seed), whom she defeated a month ago in the first round of the WTA 1000 Qatar Open (7-5, 6-4). The Japanese player also ensured her return to the top 200 after a year, with only six tournaments played. Naomi is certainly back in business.
