Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka was forced to pull out of the ongoing Pan Pacific Open due to a back injury suffered at the China Open a few weeks ago, and the Japanese superstar decided to play some pickleball while spending time in Tokyo. However, the tennis star found herself slightly embarrassed soon after picking up a paddle.
The former World No.1 returned to tennis in January 2024 following an 18-month hiatus as she gave birth to her first child. Osaka has had mixed results this season, pushing Roland Garros champ Iga Swiatek to three sets and even having match points during their encounter. Conversely, she has looked sluggish on other occasions, and was forced to retire against American Coco Gauff during their round of 16 encounter at the 2024 China Open.

Osaka has a poor start at pickleball

Several tennis players have transitioned to pickleball, including Canadian WTA star Eugenie Bouchard and former ATP World No.8 Jack Sock. Osaka decided to give it a go during her visit to the Play Academy in Tokyo. However, her first shot left her with egg on her face, as the ball landed straight in the net.
However, she eventually got the hang of it and even tried an overhead behind the back, receiving applause for her shot. After a few more practice hits, she was soon rallying in doubles.
The 27-year old has called an end to her 2024 season, as she has also pulled out of the Billie Jean King Cup finals scheduled for next month. Osaka plans to return at the start of the 2025 season, with her first event likely to be at the ASB Classic in January.
