Osaka battles past Kontaveit to semifinals at Western & Southern Open

Naomi Osaka will play against Elise Mertens in the semifinals at the Western & Southern Open after defeating Anett Kontaveit.

After Elise Mertens advanced to the semifinal at the Western & Southern Open after a comfortable victory over Pegula, she knew that she will meet Naomi Osaka or Anett Kontaveit in the next round.

And the two players really battled for the spot among the best four. Although Osaka is former world number 1 and has two Grand Slam titles, the Estonian is in a very good form and gave her opponent a very good fight.

In the first set, both players were really good on their service games as we saw only one breakpoint. It was Kontaveit who got this opportunity in the fifth game and later won the set 6-4.

However, Osaka showed her great experience in the second set. She was already losing 0-2, but she managed to win 9 games in a row to win the second set 6-2 and get a 3-0 lead in the third.

But Anett Kontaveit fought back again. She broke her Japanese opponent back and was losing only 3-4. However, Osaka showed that she was the better player on the court and won the match 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
