World number 22 and the fourteenth seeded player at the Western & Southern Open,
Elise Mertens is in a great form. Before facing Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals, she lost only one set in New York and was coming from the
Prague Open final where she lost to Simona Halep.
Although Pegula was also in a great form before the match, it was a dominant performance from the Belgian throughout the match. Mertens won 24 out of 34 rallies in the first set to win it 6-1 in just 22 minutes.
The second set saw a similar story. Pegula was much more competitive in the second set, however, Mertens still prevailed o win the match 6-1, 6-3 in just a little more than an hour. She will meet the winner of the match between
Naomi Osaka and
Anett Kontaveit in the semifinals.
