Known for her philanthropic efforts and activism, it comes as no surprise that
Naomi Osaka is taking an active role in inspiring other female athletes. The three-time Grand Slam champion recently made an ownership investment in the North Carolina Courage, a National Women's Soccer League team.
Osaka was named Forbes' highest paid female athlete in May last year, raking in $37.4 million dollars in prize money and endorsements. The Japanese star decided to use some of her wealth for the advancement of other young female athletes.
"The women who have invested in me growing up made me who I am today and I cannot think of where my life would be without them,” Osaka said on the club's website.
"My investment in the North Carolina Courage is far beyond just being a team owner," Osaka added. "It’s an investment in amazing women who are role models and leaders in their fields and inspirations to all young female athletes.
I also admire everything the Courage does for diversity and equality in the community, which I greatly look forward to supporting and driving forward."
Prior to the 2021
Australian Open, which kicks off on February 8, the 2019 champion will be competing at
A Day at the Drive exhibition event in Adelaide. This will be followed by an appearance at one of the two WTA 500 events that have been scheduled as tune-up events for the first Grand Slam of the year.
