Naomi Osaka is through to the Miami Open R4 after Nina Stojanovic withdrew prior to the match starting, as Sakkari crushed Samsonova.
Naomi Osaka is through to the Miami Open R4 without playing a point in R3 due to Nina Stojanovic pulling out of the match with a thigh injury. The announcement came about two hours before the match was supposed to start. Stojanovic said:
"I’m sorry I can’t continue my participation at the Miami Open due to my recent injury during my singles match.”
Osaka will be glad to move on deeper into the tournament but skipping over a match can have detrimental effects on the form of players. Hopefully, that won't be the case for Osaka.
Joining her in the 4th round will be Maria Sakkari who wasted no time in her match against Samsonova. The Russian did well at this event but she was no match for Sakkari who brought the heat early. Playing her signature super aggressive style she attacked Samsonova relentlessly hitting winner after winner and winning point after point.
Samsonova offered a bit more resistance in the 2nd set but it did not matter much as Sakkari ended the 68-minute match. The final score was 6-0 6-1 for an impressive showcase from Sakkari who has been enjoying a breakout 2021 so far.
