The St. Petersburg quarterfinals are set up with
Jelena Ostapenko securing the final spot over Andrea Petkovic.
Day 4 of the event gave us 3 interesting matches and one walk over that completed the final quarterfinal lineup of the WTA 500 event. In the first match, we were supposed to watch Rybakina battle it out against Martincova but the player from Kazakhstan was forced to withdraw from the match due to an injury. Martincova moved on to the quarterfinals.
In the 2nd match, we saw Begu obliterate Kvitova to the shock of many including the Czech. The first set was competitive but the Romanian player was better for most of it winning 6-4. In the 2nd set Begu completely smashed Kvitova serving up a bagel for the Czech who is having a very rough start to the season.
The next match featured Sasnovich and Cristian with the Belarussian player continuing a very solid run so far. Sasnovich has played good tennis to finish 2021 and she continued in 2022 with a very strong showing in Russia. A quarterfinal berth was earned with a 6-2 6-3 win over Cristian who continues to improve but lacks consistency for deep runs.
The final match featured Jelena Ostapenko who dismantled Andrea Petkovic rather easily. The German veteran shows a solid level here and there but she was no match for a very inspired Ostapenko who could not miss. When everything works for the Latvian she is a superb watch and today was that case as she raced to a 6-1 6-2 win over Petkovic.
