Former American tennis player
Pam Shriver believes that a
Danielle Collins type run is on the horizon for
Naomi Osaka as she was defeated by
Iga Swiatek in a Roland Garros epic on Wednesday.
The two four-time Grand Slam champions put on a real show on Court Philippe Chatrier. But Osaka had to watch as Swiatek came back at her from 5-2 up in favour of the Japanese ace in order to win the match 7-5 in the decider. But despite the 7-6, 1-6, 7-5 defeat to the World No.1, it was Osaka's stock that rose in her best display since becoming a mother.
Shriver lauded her on social media after the win as well as the match in general. But also took aim at Iga Swiatek deciding to lay into the crowd. She said that the World No.1 who had a go due to people screaming during rallies should have complained about the empty seats over the crowd noise.
Swiatek now moves on to the third round in Paris, whilst Osaka will play grass with the former World No.1 getting a wildcard for 's-Hertogenbosch in two weeks. It will now be interesting what reaction the former gets from the crowd now she has hit out. But Shriver was one of many to laud the tie.
"Wow on that match. Swiatek with another great escape in a second round in back to back majors. Maybe Osaka will have a Collins like run soon. Swiatek did not read the room well by scolding the crowd in her post match interview. Only crowd criticism should have been empty seats!," Shriver tweeted on X.
