A very good match was played at the
Charleston Open between
Paula Badosa and
Leylah Fernandez with the Spanish player winning the match 7-5 7-6(6).
Leylah Fernandez started the match well doing a lot of damage with her groundstrokes which can be very deadly when things are working. Slowly but surely Badosa was able to disrupt the Canadian in her rhythm and it worked out in her favour. She pulled the break back and held her serve largely thanks to really good serving.
Fernandez struggled to return properly and what rallies she did win were undone by her rather poor return. The Spanish player would add another break later on to take the first set 7-5. Fernandez didn't serve as well as she needed to in order to keep the match close and competitive. Only 48 % of her first serves was not good enough.
The second set opened with Badosa taking the break in the first game despite Leylah having a 40-15 advantage in it. She held it for a while even having a chance to take a double break lead but Fernandez would battle back and make it 4-4. It was decided in a tiebreak which Badosa won 8-6 in the end.
