World No. 10 Paula Badosa's participation in Indian Wells is in doubt after she withdrew from the traditional Eisenhower Cup, where she was set to play mixed doubles with her boyfriend, Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The Spanish player arrived at Tennis Paradise with serious concerns about her physical condition after a back issue forced her to retire in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 Mérida Open while facing Daria Saville (6-1, 3-5, ret.).

Badosa's Indian Wells campaign in doubt

This back injury has been a recurring problem for Badosa over the years, particularly in the same area that kept her out of the Tour for much of the 2023 season. In recent months, Badosa made a definitive leap back into the top 10 and is in a strong position, especially considering she has minimal points to defend in the upcoming weeks compared to her top-10 rivals.

Badosa holds a 10-7 record this season, highlighted by her first Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open, where she was eliminated by her close friend Aryna Sabalenka. Concerns over her condition arose after her injury against Saville, particularly as she was seen limping off the court.

She was scheduled to play mixed doubles with Stefanos Tsitsipas in the traditional Eisenhower Cup exhibition ahead of Indian Wells. However, the injury prevented her from competing. "Paula Badosa has withdrawn from the Eisenhower Cup. A replacement partner for Stefanos Tsitsipas will be announced later today."

The pair was replaced in the exhibition by Daniil Medvedev and Amanda Anisimova. As of now, it remains uncertain whether Badosa will be ready to take the court this week. As the 11th seed, she awaits her opening match on Friday, March 7, against the winner of Kamila Rakhimova (No. 75) and Caroline Dolehide (No. 73).
