There was no winners trophy for
Jessica Pegula and
Coco Gauff at the
Rome Open as the pairing lost
Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter 6-4 6-4 in the final.
The pairing didn't have a good event individually in the singles losing pretty early in the event but strung together some good performances to make it to the final. It was quite similar to the way their Madrid Open experience went. They made it to the final there as well but lost to Azarenka and Haddad Maia.
They made it to the final here but once again lost in the final. Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter proved better in two sets. The first one saw the winners go up early but give the lead back midway through. Eventually, at 4-4, they broke again to take a 5-4 lead and finished things off 6-4. They were simply better on their serve while Gauff and Pegula were quite shaky.
The second set saw the Americans step up early taking a 4-1 lead and it seemed like we were heading to a 3rd set. It didn't go that way as their opponents went on to win five games in a row to finish things off in two 6-4. Just an impressive rally from the Belgian - Australian combo who are emerging as a really strong pairing lately.
