Jessica Pegula ended a very strong run by Sloane Stephens in Guadalajara to book a spot in the semi-finals with the 37th win in WTA 1000 events in the past two years.
Jessica Pegula has had a slow rise to the top but once finally getting there the American is proving daily she truly belongs. Her win over Stephens last night was her 37th win on the Masters level in the past two years and that's the best mark of any player.
No other player won more matches in WTA 1000 events in the past two years than Pegula. It's something that surprised her as well, especially when comparing where her career was five years ago. She reacted on Twitter by writing:
"If you told me 5 years ago when I couldn’t string 2 matches together that I would have this stat… you can always improve, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise"
She has essentially been the 3rd best player in the world for the majority of the year and she will play at the
WTA Finals in 10 days time. On top of that, she'll also play in the doubles with Gauff there.
