The story of Peng Shuai has become the biggest sports story in the world with the situation still ongoing as more and more vocal criticism appears.
Peng Shuai has not been seen publicly for a few days now with the Chinese player presumably safe and well. that is according to state-affiliated media reports coming from China as well from the International Olympic Committee. The IOC is the only international organization that was able to speak with Peng via a video call in order to better understand her situation.
None of that matters much to people opposing China who has vocally criticized the state for its handling of the situation. The WTA has been the most vocal in their efforts to demand justice for Peng pulling all events from China as a response. The United States have announced a diplomatic boycott of the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing which was branded as a 'grave offense' by the Chinese government.
Now, Teng Biao, a Chinese human rights activist, and dissident spoke with CNN on the matter. Teng is a visiting scholar at the Harvard Law School at the moment but has been vocally opposed to the politics of the Chinese government during his time as a law professor at Beijing University. In a talk with CNN he said:
"Of course Peng Shuai is not safe. She is not well and is totally controlled by the Chinese government. Nobody really knows where she is being detained."
This account is one of the gravest yet of the situation from a man who spent the majority of his life in China having clashed with the local authorities several times. That has caused him to be personally attacked as well as arrested twice.
Teng also said: "The world should prioritize moral principal and freedom over money & benefit."
