Pironkova and Bertens advance to round 2 of Roland Garros

Tsvetana Pironkova and Kiki Bertens are through to the next round of the Roland Garros following good displays and victories on Monday.

Tsvetana Pironkova is back at the French Open and she will be looking to repeat some of the US Open magic she had a few weeks ago. Her start to that quest has been nothing but optimistic with the Bulgarian winning against Andrea Petkovic who isn't what she used to be but still a respectable opponent.

The Bulgarian started off well with two consecutive breaks to the German's serve reading her serves very well and hitting the ball well. She did allow Petkovic to bring one back but also added two more breaks later in the set en route to a 6-3 victory. The 2nd set was a better set by Petkovic but once again Pironkova was too god at times breaking her twice to win it by 6-3 as well.

Kiki Bertens also graced the courts today but her display was a bit shakier than that of the Bulgarian. Katarina Zavatska is not a household name in the world of tennis but today she gave Bertens a lot of trouble especially early. When Bertens plays bad, her serve is usually the culprit but today she hit it quite well early. The problem was the rallies where Zavatska dominated en route to a 6-2 1st victory.

It was after that lost set that Bertens went ballistic completely dominating the rallies in the next set. The situation non the court was the polar opposite to the first set and Bertens clinched it 6-2. The final set was even impressive with strong baseline play and exemplary serving. The end result was a bagel and Bertens through to round 2.
