Dominic Thiem and
Jack Sock got their
Roland Garros campaigns underway in a strong fashion with victories over very tricky opponents in Cilic and Opelka.
Dominic Thiem got his Roland Garros campaign underway with a strong performance against
Marin Cilic a player who is capable of playing a strong match on clay. Today wasn' that case but he was still a formidable opponent for Thiem who took the match seriously. The whole match lasted a little over two hours but it was enough for the Austrian to get the job done.
He controlled the pace of the match for the majority of the set hitting his 1st serve and impressive 68 % of the time. That allowed him to be aggressive and Cilic had little answer to that style of play. The only issues he faced was a slight drop of focus at the start of the 3rd set when he went down 0-2 but then he stringed 5 games in a row to take the lead and end the match swiftly.
Jack Sock continued his resurgence at the French Open after cruising through the qualifiers. His opponent was
Reilly Opelka a player who doesn't fare well on clay but is certainly capable of playing a strong match on it. Sock had little issues with him completely controlling the match from start to finish. He exerted only as much energy as he needed, shown by only two brakes in the first two sets. In the final one, he broke Opelka three times as the American dropped his level considerably.
All in all a happy comeback for Sock to the main draw at the Roland Garros with a 6-4 6-4 6-3 victory in almost two hours of play.
