Tsvetana Pironkova continued her remarkable return to tennis booking a quarter-final clash with Serena Williams at the US Open.
Pironkova defeated Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 to reach the Quarter-Finals and to continue a run which has seen her compete in her first tournament in three years.
“It's really unbelievable that I took it this far, and… that I actually managed to win four matches, and especially the last one which lasted I think about three hours,” Pironkova reflected in her post-match press conference. “So at this point, that is quite an achievement for me.”
“It means a lot to be here after three years of absence,” she said. “And this being my first tournament, having this great result, is something very special.”
The former World No.31 will next face Serena Williams like alluded to and it is a match she cannot wait for.
“Definitely a tough one,” Pironkova assessed. “I played against Serena a few times. I haven't won to today.
“Playing such a champion, such a legend of the game, it's tremendous honour, obviously. I'm really looking forward to that match, because I know the feeling is going to be very special.”
