Russian player
Anastasia Potapova caught a lot of heat in tennis circles after wearing a Spartak Moscow jersey to the court which many perceived as a gesture in support of Russia.
Players from Russia were allowed to participate in tennis events by the ATP and WTA but they had to remove anything that alludes to their home country. By wearing the jersey of a Russian team, Potapova kind of violated those instructions by wearing something that clearly alludes to her country.
World number one Iga Swiatek spoke out against that admitting that she was shocked to see it with Potapova dismissing any criticism and explaining that she's simply showing support to her team. Even so, the WTA reacted and issued a warning to Potapova with a statement reading:
"Regarding the Russian soccer team shirt, the WTA has
formally warned the player that this was not acceptable nor an
appropriate action. We do not expect to see any reoccurrence of this in
the future."
She wore the jersey in Dubai as well but it seems like we won't be seeing it in the future.
