Coco Gauff is through to the Emilia-Romagna Open semifinal after winning 6-3 6-3 against Amanda Anisimova.
It was an interesting match between two future superstars of American tennis with the younger Gauff emerging victorious in this one. The victory featured strong play by Gauff on her return which has been the story of the event so far. Some early struggles with her serve prevented her from jumping out to a bigger lead but in the end, she was able to pull off the win.
After the match she said:
"I was pretty satisfied with the way I played. I do think I could have served a little bit better, but other than that, I was pretty happy with the way I played today."
The world number 30 has now won 18 of her last 24 matches on tour improve to a 5-2 career record in quarterfinal matches. Gauff had a slow start to the 2nd set where she could herself down 0-3 early. She was able to overcome that and win the next six games to close it out with 6-3. On the 2nd set early struggles she said:
"In the second set, I was actually missing a lot of balls in the first three games, I think I lost like seven or eight points in a row. And then I honestly decided to go for bigger targets, and just focus on hitting the ball deeper instead of trying to hit winners."
She will now face Katerina Siniakova who played strong tennis all week long defeating Serena Williams and Caroline Garcia. On that match Gauff said:
"She’s definitely a very tricky player, she uses a lot of variety in her shots. We’re both familiar with each other’s games, and it should be a good match."
