Qinwen
Zheng fought hard and secured her spot in the final of the Asian Games, where
she will face her compatriot
Lin Zhu.
The recent
US Open quarterfinalist continues to rack up victories, this time at the Asian
Games. World No. 23 Qinwen Zheng entered the tournament as the first seed, and
her path to the semifinals was relatively smooth, as she even handed out four
"bagels" in the six sets she played.
However, in
her latest challenge, she faced the rising star Alexandra Eala, an 18-year-old
player who is currently at her career-best ranking of world No. 190,
consistently progressing over the past year.
The 4th
seed, Eala, put up a tough fight against "Queen Wen," engaging in a
marathon match lasting 3 hours and 14 minutes. Eala managed to snatch a set that
lasted 104 minutes. Nevertheless, the match ended in favor of the Chinese
player Zheng with a score of 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3.
"Top
seed Qinwen Zheng wins arguably the match of the tournament. A three-hour
battle in the semifinals against Alex Eala, a rising star in women's tennis. Could
face compatriot and second seed Zhu Lin in the final #AsianGames2023"
Eala
certainly left a lasting impression by proving that, at just 18 years old, she
can compete head-to-head with top-ranked players like Zheng. Zheng's
advancement to the final secures her first medal at the Asian Games, although
she undoubtedly hopes to secure the gold, given her status as the first seed.
However,
she will be facing a formidable opponent in her compatriot Lin Zhu, who entered
the tournament as the second seed. Over the past 52 weeks, Zhu has achieved
remarkable success, including her first WTA 250 title in Hua Hin, reaching the
final at the Osaka Open, and making it to the fourth round of the Australian
Open.
