World No.3
Aryna Sabalenka and reigning Wimbledon champion,
Marketa Vondrousova have had their second round matches at the
Berlin Ladies Open due to rain as the wait goes on for their next matches.
Sabalenka in particular was set to get her tournament underway against
Daria Kasatkina. While Vondrousova was set to face off against
Anna Kalinskaya. the winners would then face off in the Quarter-Finals in Berlin. These matches were then rescheduled for Thursday. Victoria Azarenka did win through to the Quarter-Finals defeating Zeynep Sonmez 6-3, 6-3.
Azarenka will now face Elena Rybakina or Veronika Kudermetova in the Quarter-Finals on Friday. Two singles matches will remain on Wednesday's schedule. But it was mainly making up for lost time. Ons Jabeur will face Wang Xinyu 6-4, 2-3 when rain suspended their first-round match. Following that match, Zheng Qinwen who saw off Naomi Osaka will face Katerina Siniakova for a spot in the Quarter-Finals.
But with these matches called off, the issues will also be that those who are set to now play on Thursday may think twice before playing given the proximity to Wimbledon and likely having to play two matches in a day. Especially in the case of Sabalenka and Vondrousova if they win through over Kasatkina and Kalinskaya.
