Jessica Pegula had an amazing year in 2022 and Rennae Stubs was shocked to see that she didn't win most improved player award.
The award went to Beatriz Haddad Maia a worthy player of the award but Stubbs felt like Pegula was more deserving. It's a tricky one because in an ideal world, both would got it. Pegula improved quite a bit establishing herself as a regular top 10 player in both singles and doubles. She won trophies in both singles and doubles basically being the 3rd best singles player all year behind Swiatek and Jabeur.
Her consistency is also something worth noting. Haddad Maia had a crazy sesaon as well. She improved dramatically becoming a top 20 player and winning trophies both in singles and doubles as well. It was a tricky choice to be fair but Stubbs has her own thoughts which she shared in her own podcast:
"What about Jessica Pegula? Beatriz Haddad Maia had an incredible year but...(Pegula is) three in the world. "She won a WTA 1000 event leading into the championships. Not only did she make the singles but also the doubles. I mean, come on, number three in the world. What else has she got to do?"
She added:
"She (Jessica Pegula) was nominated for player of the year but didn't get that. She was much-improved player, not the best player. The best player was Iga Swiatek."
