Rising tennis star
Emma Navarro was certainly not pleased when she saw
Diana Shnaider as a potential opponent so early in the
Wimbledon draw, but the American got the last laugh after finally scoring a win over the Russian in their third meeting this year.
Navarro rallied from a set down to secure a 2-6 6-3 6-4 victory over her in-form opponent. This would be Navarro's first win over her Russian opponent in three tries, with all meetings occurring within the last two months. Shnaider got the better of the World No.17 when they clashed earlier this year, at a WTA 125 event in Paris and later at the Bad Homburg Open. However, it was Navarro who emerged victorious at their first Grand Slam encounter.
Mental strength played a huge role in Navarro's comeback win
Following her second round win over four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, Navarro had little time to relish the victory as she was set to face a foe who has defeated her twice this summer. Nonetheless, the 23-year old dug deep and overcame her nemesis, later giving credit to both her coach and father for helping her pull through.
"I got to give credit to my coach and my dad," said Navarro when referring to her mental strength. "They definitely help me a lot in that direction.
"Yeah, Diana...she's not easy, she always sticks in there. She's a really tough player that hasn't made it easy on me this summer. I lost twice to her earlier this summer so it's really cool to be in the second week of Wimbledon. It's really awesome."
